1940s Wartime Dress Sewing Pattern – Puff Sleeves & Gathered Belt

This clever wartime design from Weldon’s has a one-piece back and softly gathered puff sleeves, creating the characteristic 1940s silhouette. The front skirt and side panels are joined directly to the bodice, with soft gathering providing shape through the front.

A small gathered belt is attached at each side of the front panel and fastens at the back with a buckle. The dress opens at the side with a placket, which can be finished with hooks and eyes or press studs, as was typical of the period.

As with many wartime patterns, no particular fabric is specified. With clothing and fabric rationed, home dressmakers often worked with whatever was available or could be reused. Cotton, rayon, viscose, linen or chambray would all work well for this design.

The pattern is sized to fit a 32″ (81 cm) bust and 36″ (91 cm) hip.
