1940s Wartime Dress Sewing Pattern – Surplice Crossover Bodice, Bust 36″

A pretty and very wearable 1940s dress from the wartime rationing era, with the practical cut and lovely shaping typical of the period.

The dress has a one-piece back and a yoked crossover front, softly gathered beneath the yoke and drawn in at the waist with a shaped belt. The skirt is gathered at the front, while sash ties give a little extra definition at the waist. Short sleeves and a side placket opening complete the design.

The pattern has been re-drafted in its original size to fit a 36″ (91 cm) bust and 40″ (102 cm) hip. As was common with patterns of this period, no waist measurement is given, as it was expected that the waist would be adjusted to suit the individual wearer.

Being a wartime pattern, there are no specific fabric recommendations. A cotton, rayon or viscose would all work well, depending on the finish and drape you prefer.
