Another clever wartime design from Weldon’s, making good use of panels and pleats to create a smart, well-shaped dress without unnecessary fuss.
The dress is made with panels running from the shoulders through to the skirt, giving it a lovely fitted shape at the waist. It features short sleeves with darts at the top, pleats in the skirt, and an open placket-style neckline finished with a neat collar. A separate placket opening at the left side completes the design.
As with many wartime patterns, there are no original fabric suggestions. With clothing rationed, it was often a case of using whatever was available or could be salvaged from another garment. Cotton, rayon, viscose, linen, chambray or a very lightweight suiting would all be suitable choices today. A small check or plain fabric would show off the panelled construction particularly well.
The pattern is designed to fit a 36-inch (91 cm) bust and 40-inch (102 cm) hip.
Step-by-step instructions are included, along with a helpful period sewing guide. As is typical of 1940s patterns, some sewing knowledge is assumed.
