A lovely 1940s knitted dress from the wartime years, with some clever little details that give it a really flattering shape. The ruching at the front of the skirt and sides of the bodice adds interest, while shoulder pads create that distinctive 1940s silhouette.
There’s a choice of short or long sleeves, a matching tie belt to define the waist, and a pretty little bow at the neckline to finish things off. It’s a smart but practical design that would have been equally at home for everyday wear or a special afternoon out.
The original dress was knitted in Sun-glo Shrinkproof or Sunbeam Super 3-ply fingering wool, using old UK No. 10 (3.25 mm) and No. 12 (2.75 mm) needles.
Yarn requirements: 16 skeins of the original 3-ply wool. Unfortunately, the original skein weight isn’t given, so it’s difficult to calculate an accurate modern equivalent. If substituting yarn, it’s worth buying a little extra once you’ve estimated your requirements, particularly if you want to avoid running short.
Measurements: To fit a 32–34 inch (81–86 cm) bust, 27 inch (69 cm) waist and 36 inch (91 cm) hip. The finished length from the top of the shoulder is 43 inches (109 cm), and the short sleeve seam measures 5 inches (13 cm).
Tension: 7 stitches and 9 rows to 1 inch (2.5 cm).
As with all vintage knitting patterns, checking your tension before starting is particularly important, especially when using a modern yarn in place of the original.
