A lovely little jumper from the 1940s, with a smart ribbed yoke, a contrasting collar and a matching trim on the little breast pocket. I particularly like the three buttons at the neckline and the neatly fitted waist, which give it that unmistakable wartime look.
The jumper is mainly knitted in stocking stitch, with a wide ribbed waistband and a choice of short or long sleeves. It’s a simple but rather smart design, perfect for wearing with a skirt or a pair of high-waisted trousers.
The pattern is written for a 35 inch bust, with the original instructions suggesting it will stretch to fit up to 37 inches. The finished length is 19½ inches.
The original materials were 7 oz (approximately 200g) of La Laine Super Fingering 3-ply wool for the short-sleeved version, or 9 oz (approximately 255g) for long sleeves, together with 1 oz (approximately 28g) of contrasting wool. You’ll need old UK size 12 (2.75mm) and size 15 knitting needles (approximately 1.75mm), including double-pointed needles for the neck edging.
The original tension is 9 stitches to 1 inch and 25 rows to 2 inches, measured over stocking stitch after pressing.
