Vintage 1940s Shirtwaist Dress Sewing Pattern – Bishop or Short Sleeve Options

A classic 1940s shirtwaist dress with a softly shaped bodice, tacked below the shoulders and gathered at the lower edge to create a little ease and fullness. The front bodice buttons beneath a neat notched collar, while the skirt joins at the natural waist for the characteristic fitted shape of the period.

There are two sleeve options. Choose full bishop sleeves for a softer, more dramatic look, or short sleeves darted into the armhole for a neater, more structured finish.

As was common with wartime patterns, fabric recommendations were fairly broad due to limited availability. Cotton, linen, viscose and similar woven fabrics would all work well for this design.

The pattern is sized to fit a 36″ (91 cm) bust, 30″ (76 cm) waist and 39″ (99 cm) hip.
