A lovely little lace blouse from 1934, combining crochet and knitting to create an attractive openwork design. The crocheted squares form a delicate lattice pattern, giving the blouse a light, airy appearance, with short sleeves and a neat, fitted waist.
The neckline, sleeve bands and bottom welt are knitted separately and added afterwards, providing a lovely contrast to the open crochet work.
The original pattern calls for 8 balls of Coats Mercer-Crochet No. 20, a No. 3½ crochet hook (approximately 6–6.5mm according to the original conversion) and a pair of 2.75mm knitting needles for the welts.
No tension is specified in the original instructions, other than to work loosely, so making a sample before starting is recommended.
A beautiful example of 1930s knitwear, and a particularly nice project for anyone who enjoys combining crochet with knitting.
