This 1960s Aran knitting pattern gives you several options for making a complete knitted suit, with a choice of sweater or button-front jacket to wear with the matching skirt.
The sweater can be made with a crew, V or polo neckline, allowing you to make different versions from the same pattern. The original garments were knitted in Sunbeam Bainin Aran, which can be substituted with a suitable modern Aran-weight yarn after checking your tension.
The pattern uses 3.25 mm (No. 10), 4 mm (No. 8) and 4.5 mm (No. 7) needles, together with a cable needle and a set of four No. 10 double-pointed needles for the necklines. Buttons are required for the jacket, while the skirt is finished with elastic, a 7-inch zip and a hook and eye.
The stated tension is 9½ stitches to 2 inches over stocking stitch using No. 7 needles.
The sweater and jacket are sized for 34, 36, 38 and 40 inch busts, with the skirt fitting 36, 38, 40 and 42 inch hips.
