Vintage 1940s Sideways Knit Striped Sweater Pattern, Wartime Jumper Design

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

This striped sweater knitting pattern from 1941 captures the simple, practical style of the wartime
years. The jumper is worked from side to side in alternating stripes, giving it a distinctive look and
a clever construction that’s straightforward to make.

The original version was knitted in 2-ply yarn on No. 10 and 12 needles, using about 6 oz (170 g) of
grey for the main colour with small amounts of flame and navy for the stripes. It also works well in
3- or 4-ply yarn, provided the tension is checked first. The correct tension is 8 stitches and 11 rows
to 1 inch.

The finished garment is designed to fit a 33–35 inch bust, with a length of about 19 inches from
the shoulder and a 4-inch sleeve seam. A needle conversion chart is included to help match the
original sizes to modern equivalents.

Simple, stylish, and economical, this pattern is a fine example of 1940s knitwear design that
still feels wearable today.
