Bright stripes were a popular way to add colour and personality to everyday knitwear in the 1930s,
and this charming rainbow-striped jumper is a wonderful example of the trend. Worked in fine
stocking stitch, it creates a lightweight sweater with a neat polo neck and a timeless vintage look
that still feels fresh today.
The original design was knitted in yellow, green, red, blue, and white, although any combination
of colours can be used to create your own unique version. The pattern is worked in 3-ply yarn on
old UK No. 12 and No. 13 needles and requires approximately 10 oz (300g) of yarn in total.
The original yarn quantities were 5 oz of the main colour, 2 oz of the secondary colour, and 1 oz
each of the remaining three contrast shades. Tension is 16 stitches and 25 rows to 2 inches on
No. 12 needles, measured slightly stretched.
