Vintage 1930s Knitting Pattern – Simple Striped V-Neck Jumper Sweater in Stocking Stitch

This original 1930s knitting pattern features a beautifully simple striped V-neck jumper with
the understated elegance that makes vintage knitwear so timeless. Worked mainly in stocking
stitch, the design is finished with ribbed cuffs and a ribbed waistband, while the V-neck is
edged in garter stitch for a neat and classic look.

The clever colour placement creates a flattering silhouette, with the darker shade used across
the lower body and sleeves to give a slimming effect. Fine contrasting stripes across the bust
and midway down the sleeves add visual interest without overwhelming the design

The original garment was knitted in Baldwin & Walker’s 3-ply Scotch Fingering yarn in mid
green and white. To recreate the design, you will need approximately 4 oz (113 g) of a dark
colour and 3 oz (85 g) of a light colour. The pattern was originally worked using UK No. 11
(3 mm) and No. 13 (2.25 mm) knitting needles.

The finished jumper is designed to fit a 33-inch (84 cm) bust. It measures 19½ inches (49.5 cm)
from shoulder to lower edge, and the sleeve seam, including the cuff, measures 19½ inches
(49.5 cm).

The gauge is approximately 17 stitches and 24 rows over 2 inches (5 cm), making this a fine-gauge
vintage knitting project that produces a lightweight, elegant sweater with a beautifully tailored fit.
