1920s Haslam Dresscutting No. 3 – Early Pattern Drafting, Dresses, Coats & Lingerie

Haslam Illustrated Book of Drafting No. 3 is one of the earliest Haslam dresscutting booklets, dating from the 1920s when the system was still being established.

Unlike the later Haslam fashion books, this early edition has no fashion illustrations. Instead, it is a substantial working dressmaking and pattern drafting manual, filled with drafting diagrams and instructions for creating a remarkably wide range of garments.

The book covers dresses and jumpers, skirts, sleeves, collars, cuffs and jabots, together with flared and godet styles and Magyar dresses. There are also costume coats, long wrap coats, capes and evening cloaks, lingerie and pyjamas, plus girls’ dresses and coats, children’s garments and a boy’s suit.

Further sections cover taking measurements, drafting dress patterns, planning dress and coat patterns on fabric and using measurement forms.

The foundation and full drafting instructions are included within the booklet, so you do not need the separate Haslam Foundation Instructions to use this edition. You will still need the Haslam Drafting Boards to work from your measurements.

For anyone interested in early Haslam dresscutting, 1920s pattern drafting or the development of made-to-measure home dressmaking, No. 3 is an especially interesting part of the Haslam system.
