Late 1930s Knitted Bolero Patterns – Two Vintage Styles

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

Two lovely little boleros from the late 1940s, each with a rather different look.

The first is a pretty, close-fitting bolero that would be perfect worn over a summer dress. It’s knitted in an unusual textured stitch that looks remarkably like crochet, producing a firm, close fabric that helps the bolero keep its shape.

The second has a more tailored appearance, worked in simple stocking stitch with neat ribbed borders and a buttoned front. A wonderfully versatile little addition to a vintage wardrobe.

Both patterns originally used 3-ply yarn, although a modern 4-ply may be a suitable alternative. Do make a tension square before starting, as this is only a suggestion.

Textured Bolero: To fit a 34–36 inch bust. Requires 7 oz (approximately 200g) of Copley’s Excelsior 3-ply fingering, with old UK No. 9 (3.75mm) and No. 10 (3.25mm) needles. Tension is 8 stitches and approximately 12 rows to 1 inch on No. 9 needles.

Stocking Stitch Bolero: To fit a 35 inch bust. Requires 6 oz (approximately 171g) of Patons Super or Beehive Scotch Fingering, with old UK No. 10 (3.25mm) and No. 12 (2.75mm) needles. Tension is 8 stitches and approximately 10 rows to 1 inch on No. 10 needles.
