1950s Fitted Sweater Dress Knitting Pattern – Bust 32–38

This 1950s knitting pattern is for a fitted sweater dress with a smooth, close-knit finish and circular ribbed neckline.

Worked mainly in stocking stitch, the dress includes openings at the waist for a belt to be threaded through. These are made as you knit and finished with crochet, although they can be omitted if you prefer an uninterrupted waistline.

The original yarn was Emu Calypso Double Twist DK, with approximately 17 oz (482 g) required for the smaller size and 18 oz (511 g) for the larger.

The main dress is worked on old UK No. 12 and No. 13 needles, with double-pointed or circular needles in No. 12, 13 and 14 used for the ribbed neckline. Six small buttons, matching bias binding and a crochet hook are also required.

Two size ranges are included, to fit bust measurements of 32–34 and 36–38 inches. The finished length is approximately 46 inches.

The stated tension is 8½ stitches and 12 rows to one inch over stocking stitch on No. 12 needles.
