1940s Women’s On Duty Service Pullover Knitting Pattern – 1944

A practical wartime design from 1944, this On Duty Service Pullover is a neat sleeveless style designed to be worn over a shirt and tie. The fitted shape features a deep V-neck, diagonal rib pattern and cable detailing, finished with a deep ribbed welt at the waist.

The original pullover was knitted in Patons Beehive Fingering 3 Ply, using UK No. 9 (3.75 mm) and UK No. 11 (3 mm) needles.

Designed to fit a 32–34 in (81–86 cm) bust, the finished length from the top of the shoulder is approximately 18 in (46 cm).

The original tension is 8 stitches to 1 inch (2.5 cm), measured unpressed over the diagonal rib pattern.

A particularly interesting piece of 1940s wartime knitting, combining the practical service look of the period with some lovely textured knitting.
