1940s Striped Knitted Dress Pattern – Pleat-Effect Skirt, Bust 32–34

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

‘Rhapsody in Stripes’ is a vintage knitted dress combining moss stitch and stocking stitch to create contrasting stripes and texture.

The skirt is worked in alternating vertical bands of moss stitch and stocking stitch, creating the appearance of pleats without actually constructing a pleated skirt. A ribbed waist draws the dress in for shape before the knitting changes direction visually with stripes across the bodice.

The neckline is finished with a moss-stitch band which fastens at either side with two small buttons, and the finished dress is worn with a silk sash.

The main dress is worked in two pieces on straight needles, with the sleeves and neckband knitted separately.

Originally designed for Jaeger ‘Super Spun’ Superfine Fingering 3-ply, the pattern requires approximately 16 oz (454 g) of the main colour and 1 oz (29 g) of a contrasting colour. Old UK No. 9 (3.75 mm) and No. 12 (2.75 mm) needles are required, together with two small buttons and a silk sash.

The stated tension is 7 stitches and 10 rows to one inch.

To fit bust: 32–34 inches.
