Hand-knitted underwear was a familiar part of everyday life during the 1940s, when well-made, practical garments were designed to last. This pattern includes two coordinating options: a cami-knickers design and a matching vest and panties set. Both are worked in fine 3-ply yarn, making lightweight yet comfortable garments that reflect the thoughtful design of the period.
The original pattern was knitted in Templetons Picotee Fingering, a 3-ply wool and rayon blend, using old UK No. 10 (3.25 mm) and No. 12 (2.75 mm) knitting needles. The cami-knickers require approximately 6½ oz (184 g) of yarn, while the vest and panties set requires approximately 8 oz (227 g).
The vest and panties set has a tension of 7 stitches and 9 rows to 1 inch. The cami-knickers are worked at 8 stitches to 1 inch in stocking stitch, 7 stitches to 1 inch in the lace pattern, and 10 rows to 1 inch.
Vest and Pantie Set Measurements: The knickers measure 13 inches down the centre back, 11 inches down the centre front, 19 inches at the side fold, and 20 inches across the widest part when relaxed. The vest measures 22 inches down the centre back and 24 inches to the front point, with a comfortably stretching fit around the body.
Cami-Knickers Measurements: The finished length from the top of the shoulder is 30 inches, the leg opening measures 23 inches around, the waist measures 20 inches before stretching, and the body measures 30 inches around below the armholes before stretching.
