A lovely fitted cardigan from 1947, with an intricate diamond cable pattern and little raised bobbles worked into the design. I particularly like the softly puffed short sleeves, neat buttoned front and shaped waist, which give it such a smart, feminine look.
The cable and bobble pattern is worked all over the cardigan, with moss stitch bands around the front edges, neckline and cuffs. It’s a rather interesting project for a more experienced knitter who enjoys working textured patterns.
The pattern is designed to fit a 34–36 inch bust, with a finished length of 20 inches from the shoulders and a sleeve seam of 5 inches.
Originally knitted in Patons Beehive Fingering 3-ply wool, you’ll need approximately 9 oz (255g), old UK size 10 (3.25mm) and size 12 (2.75mm) knitting needles, a cable needle and seven buttons.
The original tension is 7½ stitches to 1 inch, measured across the plain section of the pattern using size 10 needles. As always with vintage knitting patterns, it’s worth knitting a tension square before starting, particularly if you’re using a modern yarn.
