A pretty and practical 1940s jumper that’s ideal for wearing all year round. Knitted in an attractive basket stitch that’s surprisingly simple to work, making this a lovely project for beginners.
The neckline has a gently scalloped edge, repeated on the short sleeve cuffs, while the deep ribbed waistband gives it that neat, fitted shape so typical of the period. A versatile little jumper that would look just as good with skirts or trousers today.
The original yarn used was 7 oz (approx. 200g) of Emu 3-ply Botany wool, worked on No. 12 (2.75mm) and No. 14 (2mm) knitting needles.
To fit: Bust 32–35 inches (81–89cm).
Tension: 10 stitches to 1 inch (2.5cm) in width and 25 rows to 2 inches (5cm) in depth, measured over the basket stitch pattern.
As always, make a tension square before starting, especially when substituting a modern yarn.
