A cheerful 1940s cardigan worked in a simple but very effective striped pattern. The close rows of colour give the cardigan plenty of interest without making it complicated to knit, and it’s also a useful design for using up smaller amounts of leftover yarn.
The original cardigan was knitted in powder blue with narrow contrasting stripes of yellow, navy blue, red and green, although you could easily introduce additional colours from your own yarn oddments.
To fit a 34-inch bust.
The original yarn used was 7 ozs (200g) Patons Beehive Fingering 3 ply in the main colour, with ¾ oz (22g) of each of the four contrasting colours. You will also need a pair each of No. 10 (3.25mm) and No. 12 (2.75mm) needles and five buttons.
Tension: 8 stitches to the inch with the pattern un-stretched will give a 34-inch bust measurement.
