A charming and rather unusual 1930s knitted coat and matching Fez hat. The striped coat has a deep circular yoke fastened with five buttons, leaving the lower section to swing freely in a bolero style. The original was worked in brown and white, giving the simple striped design a particularly smart finish.
The coat is knitted mainly in stocking stitch, using six rows of the light colour followed by six rows of the dark. The yoke and borders provide contrast to the striped body.
The matching little Fez hat has a crocheted crown with a stiff canvas brim, embroidered with close rows of satin stitch.
The original yarn used was 9 ozs (256g) of Ramada Wool 4 ply: 5 ozs (142g) in the dark shade and 4 ozs (114g) in the light shade. You will also need No. 8 (4mm) and No. 10 (3.25mm) knitting needles, a No. 11 (3mm) crochet hook, five small buttons, ¼ yard of canvas and ¼ yard of lining for the hat.
Knitting tension is 6 stitches and 8 rows to one inch. Crochet tension is 8 double crochet to one inch in width and 7 rows to one inch.
The coat fits a 34–36 inch bust and the hat measures 22 inches around the head.
