1940s Wartime Tailored Coat Sewing Pattern – Faux Fur Collar, Bust 36

This 1940s Bestway sewing pattern is for a single-breasted tailored coat, cut in ten panels and designed during the wartime austerity period when economical use of fabric was particularly important.

The coat fastens at the front with four large buttons and has two-piece sleeves. Slot pockets are incorporated into the front and side-front panel seams, while the wide collar is finished with a faux-fur upper layer. The coat is fully lined.

The pattern is for a 36-inch bust and requires approximately 3½ yards of 54-inch-wide fabric and 4¼ yards of 36-inch-wide lining.

No particular fabric is specified in the original pattern, but tweed, Melton, boiled wool and similar coating fabrics would be suitable choices.

The original instructions are fairly brief, so I also include a tailoring guide to provide additional help with the construction and finishing of the coat.

To fit bust: 36 inches.
