1930s Knitting Pattern – Ladies Classic Vintage Cap and Scarf

Unlike many 1930s caps, which were often crocheted, this one is knitted, making it both
unique and fun to work up. The textured, ridged pattern is created simply by knitting two
rows and purling two rows, worked in the round—easy and effective! To finish the cap, a
simple clip made from polished wood was added to the centre front—just the right little
detail to bring it all together.

About the Scarf
The matching scarf was originally designed to be short and neat, ideal for tucking into a
coat collar. But if you prefer a longer version, it’s very easy to adjust the length. It’s knitted
in two pieces, using two straight needles, so no fancy techniques needed.

Yarn & Texture
The original yarn used was called “Sea Urchin” knitting wool—a beige and white blend
with little white flecks that gave it a soft, slightly fuzzy tweed look. It added loads of
character and warmth to the finished set.

You’ll Need
Around 5 oz (142g) of “Sea Urchin” or a similar aran-weight, tweed-style yarn
A set of four No. 6 (5.0mm) double-pointed needles (Or just two of them, or
even straight needles if you’re not working in the round)

Tension / Gauge: 5 stitches per inch

The original yarn isn’t made anymore, but based on the description and gauge, something
in the aran weight range with a knobbly or tweedy texture would be a great substitute.
