1930s Tunisian Crochet Jumper, Cap & Scarf Pattern – Bust 34–36″

An unusual 1930s three-piece set consisting of a warm crocheted jumper with matching cap and scarf. The jumper has a tailored shape with a zip-fastened front and turn-back collar, and is worked in two contrasting colours. The collar is knitted in rib, while the remainder of the jumper, together with the cap and scarf, is crocheted.

The pattern uses tricot crochet, an older name for the technique now generally known as Tunisian crochet. This creates a firm, substantial fabric and makes the pattern better suited to someone with some crochet experience rather than a complete beginner.

The original materials were 14 oz (400 g) of “Kelpie” wool in light grey and 7 oz (200 g) in a darker grey. You will also need a No. 7 (4.5 mm) tricot/Tunisian crochet hook, a pair of UK No. 12 (2.75 mm) knitting needles and a 7″ (18 cm) zip.

The exact modern equivalent of the original Kelpie wool is uncertain, so I recommend choosing a suitable wool by working a tension sample rather than relying on yarn weight alone.

The jumper measures 34–36″ (86–91 cm) around the underarms, with a finished length of 20½” (52 cm) and sleeve seam of 19″ (48 cm). The scarf is approximately 33″ (84 cm) long and the cap measures approximately 10½” (27 cm) across.

Tension: 5 clusters to 2″ (5 cm) in width, with one row of clusters and the following double crochet row measuring 1″ (2.5 cm) in depth.
