1944 Hat and Gloves Knitting Pattern – Ruched 3-Ply Wartime Accessories

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

This 1944 knitting pattern is for a matching pair of ruched gloves and a small fitted hat, a very typical wartime accessory set that could be made with relatively little yarn.

Both pieces are worked in 3-ply wool. The hat has a softly ruched finish and requires a small piece of canvas or similar material to give it structure. The gloves use the same gathered effect, creating the distinctive textured finish seen in the photograph.

The hat is knitted on old UK No. 10 (3.25 mm) and No. 12 (2.75 mm) needles, with a tension of 7½ stitches to 1 inch (2.5 cm), unpressed, on the No. 10 needles. The gloves are worked on a set of four old UK No. 14 (2 mm) needles, with a tension of 10½ stitches to 1 inch (2.5 cm).

The hat is sized to fit a 6½–6¾ head size, and the gloves to fit 6¼–6¾.

A lovely little 1940s project if you enjoy making the accessories that really complete a period outfit.
