1950s Women’s Jumper & Cardigan Knitting Pattern – 3 Designs, Bust 34–38

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

A lovely 1950s knitting pattern with three coordinating pieces: two short-sleeved jumpers and a classic long-sleeved cardigan. Simple, flattering shapes make these designs particularly easy to bring into a modern wardrobe, worn with jeans and trousers as easily as with a full vintage skirt.

The low-neck jumper has a wide rounded neckline, neat short sleeves and a softly fitted waist, while the second version has a higher neckline for a slightly different look. The matching cardigan has long sleeves, a round neck and buttoned front.

The pattern is written for bust sizes 34, 36 and 38 inches (86, 91 and 97 cm).

Originally knitted in Emudown or Emudown Tinsel. For a modern substitute, look for a soft 4-ply/fingering-weight yarn with a gentle halo, such as an angora, mohair or alpaca blend. A fine metallic or sparkle thread can be carried alongside the yarn to recreate the subtle shimmer of the original Tinsel version. Always choose your modern yarn by matching the stated tension rather than the original ball quantities.

Needles are UK 10, 11 and 12 (3.25 mm, 3 mm and 2.75 mm), with a tension of 7 stitches and 9½ rows to 1 inch. The cardigan requires nine buttons and the high-neck jumper a 4-inch (10 cm) zip.
