Vintage 1940s Fair Isle Sweater Knitting Pattern for Women – Written Instructions

A classic 1940s Fair Isle sweater knitting pattern featuring a soft grey base with repeating
navy and red colourwork stripes. Originally worked in Copley’s 3-ply Excelsior Wool, the
design has a flattering vintage fit with short sleeves and optional button fastening at the
shoulder, or it can be worn as a simple pull-on style.

The Fair Isle pattern is written row-by-row with no charts to follow, making it ideal for
knitters who prefer traditional written instructions. To fit a 33–36 inch bust.

Materials required: approx. 5 oz grey yarn and 1 oz each of navy and red. Uses old UK
needle sizes 10, 12 and 13. Tension: 17 sts to 2 inches and 9 rows to 1 inch over
patterned sections.
