This elegant 1930s cape and hat set is a lovely choice for colder days. The short cape has a neat,
classic shape that sits comfortably on the shoulders, while the Fez-style hat adds a distinctive
vintage touch, finished with a small bow.
The cape is knitted on a circular needle, so a little experience using one will be helpful. If you’re
new to circular knitting, simply take your time and make sure the stitches don’t twist as you join
and begin working. The hat, on the other hand, is worked flat on two needles, making it a
straightforward and enjoyable knit.
The original pattern called for Copley’s “Knoplaine” wool, a textured yarn that was said to
resemble Persian Lamb. As this yarn is no longer available, a 4-ply Astrakhan or faux-fur
style yarn should give a similar look and texture.
You will need a pair of 3.25 mm (UK No.10) needles, a 3.25 mm circular needle, and one
spare 3.25 mm needle. The pattern requires approximately 13 oz (370 g) of yarn for the
cape and 3 oz (85 g) for the hat.
The tension is about 6½ stitches and 8½ rows to one inch. The finished cape is designed
to fit a 34–36 inch bust, and the hat will fit a 21–22 inch head.
Altogether, it’s a charming project that captures the stylish simplicity of 1930s winter
fashion.
