1940s Ladies Ankle Socks Knitting Pattern | Plain and Fancy Vintage Designs

This lovely 1940s pattern includes two different ankle sock designs, giving you a choice depending
on your mood. One pair features a classic tennis sock style, while the other is worked in a pretty
fancy stitch that adds a touch of vintage charm.

Both designs are knitted in 3 ply yarn and worked on three needles. Some experience with sock
knitting and turning a heel will be helpful, but don’t let that put you off, if you’ve been wanting
to try socks, this is a great pattern to have a go with.

Both styles are designed to fit a foot length of approximately 9½ inches.

The original yarn used was W.B. Melody 3 ply. You’ll need around 2 oz for each pair, plus an extra
1 oz of contrast yarn for the tennis socks. A set of No. 12 (2.75mm) double-ended needles is
required.

Tension for the tennis socks, worked in stocking stitch, is 17 stitches to 2 inches in width and 11
rows to 1 inch in depth. For the fancy socks, worked over the pattern stitch, the tension is 15
stitches to 2 inches in width.
