This vintage 1940s pattern creates a charming peasant-style (Tyrolean inspired) cardigan
designed for both mother and daughter, making it perfect for matching pieces with a
timeless feel. The body is worked in smooth stocking stitch, while the sleeves and bands
add texture with a classic basket stitch. Ribbed yokes give it structure, and the whole
piece is finished neatly with a crochet edge that adds just the right decorative touch.
It was originally designed using sports yarn, which today is closest to a light DK, though
you’ll want to check your tension to be sure you get the right fit. The pattern calls for
approximately 14 oz of the main colour and 2 oz of a contrasting shade, along with 4 mm
needles, a crochet hook for the finishing, and nine buttons.
The gauge/tension is 5½ stitches per inch, and the finished garment is sized to fit a 30
or 34 inch bust.
