This late 1940s cardigan takes its inspiration from traditional Tyrolean knitwear, with a lovely textured stitch and colourful floral embroidery adding interest to an otherwise simple, fitted design.
It has long sleeves, a round neckline and crocheted borders in green, yellow and red. Little embroidered flowers decorate the front and sleeves, while a twisted cord with tassels at the neckline finishes off the Alpine look.
The original pattern uses Sirdar Super Fast to Knit wool, a 100% wool yarn. A modern DK wool would be a sensible starting point when looking for a substitute, although it isn’t a confirmed equivalent. Choose a yarn suitable for 5mm needles and make a tension square in the actual pattern stitch, aiming for the original gauge of 9 stitches to 1¾ inches (approximately 20.5 stitches per 10cm). Adjust your needle size if necessary, and check that the knitted fabric has the right feel and drape before starting.
Instructions are included for the knitting, crochet borders and floral embroidery.
