1950s Empire Line Dress Sewing Pattern – V Neck, Gored Flared Skirt

This 1954 sewing pattern is for an Empire-line dress with a softly gathered bodice, low wide V neckline and a gored, flared skirt.

The bodice is gathered beneath the bust to create the raised Empire waistline, with the midriff seams and armhole edges finished with bias trim. A bow at the centre back provides the finishing detail.

The dress also lends itself well to a tea-length 1950s-style wedding or bridal dress, particularly with a contrasting lace bodice.

Suitable fabrics include cotton, shantung, taffeta, surah, chambray, rayon or viscose and silk, giving plenty of choice between an everyday or occasion version.

The pattern is drafted for a 36-inch bust, 30-inch waist and 39-inch hip.
