1950s Dolman Sleeve Sweater Knitting Pattern – Button Front Cardigan (Bust 34–37”)

This 1953 dolman sleeve sweater is a smart, wearable design with a button-up front, worked
in three colours—a main shade, contrast sections, and a separate button band that frames
the front cleanly. The saddle stitch detail adds just enough texture without overcomplicating
the knit, while the dolman shaping gives a relaxed fit through the shoulders and a neat line
overall.

Originally written for 3-ply yarn on vintage No.11 and 12 needles, it can easily be adapted to
4-ply by adjusting your tension and needle size. It’s a straightforward way to recreate a 1950s
style using modern materials, without losing the structure that makes these pieces work so
well.
