A lovely 1940s jumper knitted in bold two-colour zigzag stripes. The fitted shape is finished with a deep ribbed welt at the waist, matching ribbed neckband and neat short sleeves. A small opening at the back neck fastens with three tiny buttons.
The zigzag pattern continues across the body and sleeves, giving the jumper its wonderfully distinctive 1940s look. The original was knitted in chocolate brown and gold, a lovely period combination, although the design would work beautifully in any two contrasting colours.
The finished jumper measures 34 in (86.5 cm) around the underarms, stretching to approximately 36 in (91.5 cm), with a length of 19 in (48 cm) from shoulder to lower edge.
The original pattern uses 4 oz (114 g) of Copley’s 3-ply Excelsior Wool in the main colour and 3 oz (86 g) in the contrast colour. You will also need a pair each of UK No. 9 (3.75 mm) and UK No. 12 (2.75 mm) knitting needles, together with three tiny buttons for the back opening.
The required tension is approximately 15 stitches to 2 in (5 cm) in width and 17 rows to 2 in (5 cm) in depth, measured over the pattern after pressing.
