1940s Wartime Knitted Vest and Panties Pattern | Women’s Vintage Underwear Bust 34–38

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

Published in 1941, this knitted vest and panties set is a practical example of wartime make-do-and-mend ingenuity. During rationing, the complete set could be made using just four clothing coupons, making it an economical choice at a time when every coupon counted.

The design is worked mainly in stocking stitch, with delicate eyelet panels decorating the lower legs of the panties and the front and back of the vest. Ribbed welts and a ribbed waistband provide a comfortable fit while adding a neat, tailored finish.

Designed to fit a 34–38 inch bust, the original pattern was knitted in Feminia 2-ply Art Silk and Wool using 8 oz (227 g) of yarn. You’ll also need a pair of No. 9 (3.75 mm) and No. 11 (3 mm) knitting needles, elastic for the waistband and ribbon for the shoulder straps. The original tension is 7 stitches and 10 rows to one inch.
