This two-colour bolero design dates from 1942 and has a really interesting construction, it’s
worked sideways, which gives the finished piece a lovely shape and flow.
The original pattern was written for Cairn Rimple Wool, now discontinued. From the
description, it appears to have been a bouclé-style yarn, approximately DK weight,
which makes it easy to substitute with modern equivalents.
The bolero is knitted on No. 9 needles, with a stated tension of 6 stitches per inch.
As with any garment from this era, it’s important to knit a tension square before
starting, as fit depends heavily on gauge.
The finished size is designed to fit a 31–33 inch bust, making it a neater, close-fitting
style, typical of early 1940s knitwear and ideal for layering over dresses or high-waisted
outfits.
