1940s Three Colour Striped Cardigan Jacket Vintage Knitting Pattern

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

A rather smart little cardigan jacket from 1945, knitted in three colours to create a lovely all-over textured stripe pattern. I particularly like the neat collar, buttoned front and little pockets, which give it a tailored look without being too formal.

The cardigan has a gently shaped waist, long sleeves and a flattering hip-length finish. It’s one of those lovely wartime designs that would look just as good today, worn with a simple skirt or a pair of trousers.

The pattern is written to fit a 34–36 inch bust, with a finished length of 22 inches from the top of the shoulders and sleeves measuring 18½ inches, or your preferred length.

Originally knitted in Patons Beehive Fingering 3-ply wool, you’ll need approximately 6 oz (170g) in the main colour and 3 oz (85g) in each of two contrasting colours. The pattern uses old UK size 11 (3mm) and size 12 (2.75mm) knitting needles, with a tension of 8 stitches to 1 inch, measured before pressing.

You’ll also need ten buttons or button moulds. The original instructions include a little crochet work if you’re making covered buttons, so some crochet experience would be helpful.
