1940s Check Blouse Knitting Pattern – Women’s Colour-work Cardigan, Bust 32–34

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

This 1942 Duster Check Blouse is a great example of wartime knitting, using small amounts of contrasting yarn to create a bold checked design without being wasteful. Originally knitted in grey, red and white, it would work equally well in your own choice of three colours.

The blouse is worked throughout in stocking stitch, with plain ribbed welts and neckband, long sleeves and a five-button front. The fitted 32–34 inch (81–86cm) bust and neat 19½ inch (49.5cm) length give it that unmistakable 1940s shape.

The original yarn was Patons Super or Beehive Scotch Fingering 4 ply. You will need 10 oz (approx. 290g) of the main colour and 2 oz (approx. 60g) each of the two contrasting colours.

The pattern uses UK No. 9 (3.75mm) and No. 8 (4mm) knitting needles, together with a No. 10 (3.25mm) crochet hook and 5 buttons. The stated tension is 6½ stitches to 1 inch. Sleeve seam measures 18½ inches (47cm).
