The unusual openwork running alongside the cable twists gives this 1939 cardigan its distinctive look. Knitted mainly in stocking stitch, the cables run down each front and along the sleeves, with stitches deliberately dropped on either side to create the openwork effect.
The cardigan has long sleeves, a neat ribbed lower edge and a three-button front, finished with a wide ribbed band around the fronts and back neck. The original was knitted in Sirdar Knitfast wool, using 14 oz (approximately 400g).
It will fit approximately a 34–36 inch (86–91cm) bust, with a finished length of 18½ ins (47cm). The width all round at the underarms is 34 ins (86cm), stretching to 36 ins (91cm), and the sleeve seam measures 18½ ins (47cm).
You will need a pair each of old UK No. 9 (3.75mm) and No. 5 (5.5mm) knitting needles, together with 3 buttons.
Tension is 4½ stitches in width and 6 rows in depth to 1 inch (2.5cm).
