1930s Tennis Cardigan Knitting Pattern – Mandarin Collar

A smart and unusual 1930s tennis cardigan with short sleeves, a high mandarin collar and contrasting striped details. It fastens with a single button at the waist and neck, with a further button on a tab at the back.

The cardigan is worked throughout in K1, P1 rib, but with a clever twist. Each knit stitch is worked through the back of the loop, producing the distinctive twisted rib effect seen in the original design.

The original yarn used was Ramada 4 ply, with 6 oz (171g) in red and 2 oz (57g) in white. It is worked on a pair of No. 9 (3.75mm) knitting needles and requires three buttons.

Tension is 6½ stitches and 8 rows to 1 inch.
