This classic 1930s one-piece trunk-style bathing suit knitting pattern captures the practical
elegance of early swimwear, with a shape that still feels surprisingly wearable today. The
design is simple and functional, but thoughtfully constructed, featuring a built-in bra (with-
out straps) inside the suit to provide light shaping and a touch of modesty while keeping
the original silhouette intact.
The finished piece measures approximately 28 inches from the top of the shoulder to the
lower edge and is designed to fit a 34-inch bust, creating a close, streamlined fit typical
of the period.
It’s worked in 3-ply fingering yarn, with around 7oz (200g) required, ideally a “patonised”
or shrink-resistant type for durability. You’ll need a pair each of No. 12 and No. 14 needles,
along with a set of four double-pointed No. 14 needles to complete the construction.
To achieve the intended structure through the bust, a cotton brassiere is incorporated as
a lining, though modern pre-formed swimwear cups can easily be used as an alternative.
