1930s Embroidered Short Sleeve Jumper Vintage Knitting Pattern

Price range: £3.99 through £5.99

This is such an unusual little 1930s jumper, with its colourful embroidered borders and row of tiny crochet buttons. The main body is simply knitted in stocking stitch, while the collar, front opening and short sleeve bands are worked in garter stitch and finished with rows of feather stitching in contrasting colours.

It has a lovely 1930s shape, with short sleeves gathered into narrow bands and a deep ribbed waistband giving it that neat, fitted finish. The original was worked in maize with lilac, amethyst and green embroidery, but it would be very easy to choose your own combination of colours.

The original yarn was Femina Crepespún wool, using 7 oz (200 g) for the main colour, together with one skein each of three contrasting embroidery colours. The little buttons are crocheted to match.

The finished jumper measures 34 in (86.5 cm) around the underarms, stretching to 35 in (89 cm). Length from shoulder to lower edge is 19 in (48 cm) and the sleeve seam is 5½ in (14 cm).

You will need No. 10 (3.25 mm) and No. 12 (2.75 mm) knitting needles, together with a No. 14 (2 mm) crochet hook.

Tension is 7 stitches and 9 rows to 1 inch (2.5 cm).
