A neat little cardigan-style jumper with all the understated elegance of the late 1930s. The pretty mock cable panels add just the right amount of texture without being complicated to knit, while the smart button-front fastening and softly shaped collar give it a polished finish. It’s one of those versatile designs that looks just as lovely with a skirt today as it would have done when it first appeared.
The pattern includes instructions for both long and short sleeves, making it an ideal project for changing seasons. It is designed to fit a 33–35 inch bust, with a finished length of approximately 18½ inches. Sleeve seams measure 18 inches for the long-sleeved version or 5 inches for the short sleeves.
The original pattern uses 3-ply fingering yarn, requiring 200g (7 oz) for the long-sleeved version or 170g (6 oz) for the short sleeves. You’ll also need 3.25mm (UK No. 10) and 3.75mm (UK No. 9) knitting needles, together with eight buttons to complete the front fastening. The stated tension is 9 stitches per inch worked over the pattern before pressing.
Like many of the best vintage knitting designs, this cardigan relies on simple stitch patterns to create an elegant result.
