A simple but beautifully flattering 1930s afternoon frock, with distinctive peg-top sleeves and three lovely neckline variations to choose from.
The first version is made in black velvet with a contrasting white satin vest, finished with a generous bow. The second is shown in pearl grey velvet with a softly draped, cross-over vest in cream lace and a smart pleated bow. The third offers another take on grey velvet, this time with an oyster crepe de chine vest and matching cape.
The dress itself is fairly straightforward to make, with the side skirt sections cut on the bias to create a lovely smooth line over the hips. It’s a clever bit of 1930s dressmaking that gives the frock its flattering shape without complicated construction.
Although originally designed as an afternoon dress, it would work equally well for an evening occasion, particularly in velvet with one of the contrasting neckline treatments.
Fabric suggestions: Velvet for the main dress, with satin, lace or crepe de chine for the contrasting neckline details.
Skill level: Intermediate. Not for the novice sewer as the instructions are mainly written
