A practical vest and knickers set was an essential part of many women’s wardrobes during the 1940s. This design was originally published as a Coupon Saving Pattern, intended to make economical use of lightweight wool at a time when materials were carefully conserved. The result is a close-fitting vest with ribbon shoulder straps and matching knitted knickers with an elasticated waist, offering a practical everyday underwear set typical of the period.
The original pattern was knitted in Shetland 2-ply using old UK No. 10 (3.25 mm) and No. 12 (2.75 mm) knitting needles. You will also need a fine crochet hook for the finishing, ribbon for the shoulder straps, and elastic for the knickers.
The vest requires approximately 3½ oz (100 g) of yarn, and the knickers require a further 3½ oz
(100 g).
Tension: Approximately 8 stitches to 1 inch.
The finished vest measures 25 inches from the top to the lower edge and 27 inches around the body before stretching. The knickers measure 19 inches from the top to the lower edge and 45 inches around the widest part.
