This elegant crochet evening dress captures the soft glamour of the late 1930s, with delicate
lacework and an easy, flattering drape. The design is wonderfully simple, the front and back
are worked the same, then finished with velvet ribbon ties at the shoulders, adding both
structure and a subtle contrast. A gentle ruffle is added at the end, giving it that effortless
off-the-shoulder look that feels timeless rather than fussy.
Originally made in Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, a 4-ply cotton, the dress has a light yet substantial
feel that works beautifully for evening wear. The original pattern calls for 17 to 21 balls of the
main colour, depending on yardage (vintage balls ranged from 175 to 250 yards), and is worked
on a No. 4 hook in old sizing, which corresponds to approximately a 4mm (modern size 8) hook.
Designed to fit a 36-inch bust, this piece is a lovely example of period crochet, wearable, and
surprisingly straightforward to construct.
