This beautifully feminine 1950s cardigan is designed to flatter the figure, with gentle fullness
across the bust and a deep fitted welt that creates a lovely hourglass shape. It can be worn on
its own or layered over a blouse, making it a versatile piece that works just as well for everyday
wear as it does for a more dressed-up vintage look.
The pattern is straightforward and enjoyable to knit, with most of the garment worked in
classic stocking stitch. The welt, cuffs, collar, front yokes, and strappings are finished in
single rib, adding subtle texture and structure while keeping the knitting relaxing and
easy to follow.
The original design was created to fit a 34–36 inch bust and was knitted using 10 oz
(284g) of Copley’s 3-ply Excelsior Super Botany fingering yarn. The pattern uses a pair
of 2.25mm and 3mm needles, with four buttons to complete the front fastening.
Tension is measured over stocking stitch on 3mm needles at 17 stitches to 2 inches
and 11 rows to 1 inch, ensuring a neat, close-fitting finish typical of authentic 1950s
knitwear.
